Insider Tip

The Monet room is experienced barefoot on white marble. Visit in the afternoon when natural light fills the space most beautifully.

JEMS Tip

We book timed-entry tickets (required, sell out fast) and plan the optimal Naoshima island route.

About

Built entirely underground by Tadao Ando, the Chichu Art Museum houses just three artists — Claude Monet's Water Lilies in a naturally lit room, James Turrell's light installations, and Walter De Maria's monumental sculpture. Architecture and art merge perfectly.

Crowd Avoidance

Visit on weekday mornings right at opening. Avoid rainy days when indoor attractions get busier. Book timed-entry tickets when available.

Getting There

Naoshima Island — bus from Miyanoura Port (20 min) or bicycle (15 min).
