About
The great torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine appears to float on the water at high tide — one of Japan's three most scenic views. At sunset, the vermillion gate glows against the darkening sky and mountains of Miyajima Island.
Crowd Avoidance
Stay on the island past 5pm when day-trippers leave. Sunset and evening illumination are magical with fewer people.
Getting There
JR San-yo Line to Miyajimaguchi Station (27 min from Hiroshima). Then JR ferry or Matsudai ferry to Miyajima (10 min).
