Insider Tip

Start at a bar with an English sign or open door. Cover charges range ¥500–¥1,500. Two drinks per bar, then move on — that is the Golden Gai way.

JEMS Tip

We identify foreigner-friendly bars (some have cover charges or regulars-only policies) and brief you on the etiquette — including the seating charge system and how to read the door signs.

About

Golden Gai is a network of six narrow alleys in Shinjuku containing over 200 tiny bars, each seating 5–10 people. Each bar has its own theme, from jazz to horror movies to philosophy. It is a living museum of postwar Tokyo nightlife culture.

Crowd Avoidance

Visit on weekdays when possible. Tokyo attractions are busiest on weekends and national holidays.
