Insider Tip

The inner garden (Meiji Jingu Gyoen, ¥500) has a stunning iris garden in June and is almost always empty compared to the main shrine.

JEMS Tip

We schedule your visit to coincide with traditional Shinto wedding processions (weekends, typically 10am–2pm) for an unforgettable cultural moment. We also guide you to the hidden Meiji Jingu Gyoen garden.

About

Meiji Shrine is dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. Set within a 170-acre evergreen forest, it offers a peaceful escape from the surrounding Harajuku bustle. The towering torii gate at the entrance is one of the largest in Japan.

Crowd Avoidance

Early morning or late afternoon on weekdays. Avoid New Year period (Dec 31–Jan 3) when millions visit.

Getting There

Harajuku Station (JR Yamanote Line) — south exit, 1-minute walk to the main torii. Also Meiji-jingumae Station (Chiyoda/Fukutoshin Lines).
