Tsurunoyu is the star — book months ahead. The mixed outdoor bath is the most atmospheric. Buy the meguri-cho pass (¥1,800) to visit all seven ryokan baths.

About
Nyuto Onsen is a collection of seven rustic hot spring ryokan deep in the mountains of Akita Prefecture. The most famous, Tsurunoyu, has a 350-year history and milky white outdoor baths surrounded by beech forest. A true Japanese hidden gem.
Crowd Avoidance
Visit between 2-4pm when most guests are sightseeing, or after 9pm for a quiet soak. Avoid weekends and holiday periods.
Getting There
Tazawako Station (Akita Shinkansen from Tokyo, 3 hrs) then bus to Nyuto Onsen (50 min).
