Insider Tip
Beyond the prominent Western art, dedicate time to the Craft Art Gallery. It houses an exquisite, often tranquil, collection of Japanese ceramics and woodblock prints, providing a peaceful contrast to the Main Gallery. Additionally, seek out the sculptures strategically placed in the garden between the Main Gallery and the Annex; these outdoor installations offer unique photographic opportunities and a moment of quiet reflection away from indoor crowds.
JEMS Tip
For an optimized visit, commence your exploration at the Main Gallery immediately upon opening to experience the core Western art collection with minimal distraction. Following this, prioritize the Kojima Torajiro Memorial Hall (a brief 1-minute walk), which offers crucial context on the museum's founder and the Japanese artist who shaped its collection, often overlooked by general visitors. JEMS can arrange a bespoke guided tour focusing on the collection's unique history and the architectural significance of the various buildings.
About
The Ohara Museum of Art, founded in 1930 by textile magnate Ohara Magosaburo, is Japan's first private museum focusing on Western art. Its Main Gallery displays masterpieces by artists such as El Greco, Gauguin, Picasso, and Rodin. The museum complex also includes a Craft Art Gallery, Asiatic Art Gallery, and the Kojima Torajiro Memorial Hall, celebrating the Japanese artist instrumental in building the collection.
Crowd Avoidance
To significantly reduce crowd exposure, aim to visit within the first hour after opening (9:00-10:00 AM) or during the final 90 minutes before closing. Weekdays, specifically Tuesdays through Thursdays, are considerably less busy than weekends or national holidays, which should be avoided if possible. Note that from December to February, operating hours are shortened until 15:00, which can compress visitor flow and make these months feel more crowded.
Getting There
From Okayama Station, take the JR Sanyo Main Line bound for Fukuyama or Mihara to Kurashiki Station (approx. 17-20 minutes). Upon arrival, exit the station via the south exit and follow the clear signage towards the Bikan Historical Quarter. The Ohara Museum of Art is located within a comfortable 10-minute walk.
