Insider Tip
The morning markets run 7am–12pm daily. The Miyagawa market is larger; the Jinya-mae market is more local. Look for sake breweries with sugidama (cedar ball) hanging outside — it means new sake is ready.
JEMS Tip
We plan a Takayama visit as part of a Nagoya–Takayama–Kanazawa route through the Japanese Alps, including sake brewery tours and the best Hida beef restaurants.
About
Takayama's Sanmachi Suji district preserves Edo-era merchant houses with dark wooden lattice facades, sake breweries, and craft shops. The morning markets along the Miyagawa River sell local produce, pickles, and crafts. Hida beef rivals Kobe beef in quality.
Crowd Avoidance
Visit for an early lunch (11am) or late lunch (2-3pm) to avoid peak dining crowds. Weekdays have shorter waits.
Getting There
Takayama Station (JR Takayama Line — Wide View Hida from Nagoya, 2.5 hrs). Also accessible from Kanazawa via bus (2 hrs).
