Insider Tip

Arrive at opening (9am) to avoid crowds inside the keep. The steep stairs inside are challenging — wear comfortable shoes.

JEMS Tip

We time your visit for cherry blossom season when the castle is surrounded by 1,000 trees, and route you through the less-crowded west bailey.

About

Himeji Castle is widely considered Japan's most beautiful castle. The brilliant white exterior earned it the nickname "White Heron Castle." It is one of only 12 original castles remaining in Japan and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Crowd Avoidance

Visit on weekdays and arrive early for the best experience with fewer crowds. Avoid national holidays and peak tourist seasons.
