Insider Tip

The Yumedono (Hall of Dreams) in the eastern precinct houses a secret Buddha statue that is only shown twice a year (spring and autumn).

JEMS Tip

We pair Horyu-ji with the nearby Chuguji nunnery (home to one of Japan's most beautiful Buddhist statues) for a half-day of ancient Japan without the crowds.

About

Horyu-ji is home to the world's oldest surviving wooden structures, dating back to 607 AD. This UNESCO World Heritage site houses priceless Buddhist art and architecture. Far less crowded than Nara's main attractions.

Crowd Avoidance

Visit early morning at opening time or late afternoon to avoid tour groups. Weekdays are much quieter than weekends.

Getting There
