Insider Tip

The monkeys bathe most actively in winter (Dec–Mar) when it is cold. They are present year-round but less likely to be in the water during warm months. The 30-minute forest walk is beautiful but can be icy — wear proper footwear.

JEMS Tip

We time your visit for the best monkey-bathing activity (cold mornings are best) and pair it with a stay at a nearby onsen ryokan in Shibu Onsen — a charming hot spring town with nine public baths.

About

Jigokudani Monkey Park is the only place in the world where wild monkeys bathe in natural hot springs. The Japanese macaques soak in the steaming outdoor pools surrounded by snow-covered mountains — one of Japan's most iconic winter images.

Crowd Avoidance

Start early morning for the best experience and fewer people. Autumn foliage and cherry blossom seasons are the most crowded periods.

Getting There

Nagano Station (Shinkansen from Tokyo, 80 min) → bus to Kanbayashi Onsen (40 min) → 30-minute forest walk to the park.
