Insider Tip

After the Oasaji service, instead of immediately heading for breakfast in the main tourist area, seek out a traditional temple lodging (shukubo) near the temple's side streets. Many offer simple, authentic vegetarian breakfast sets (shojin ryori) that are not typically advertised to general tourists, providing a deeper cultural immersion and a quieter start to your day.

JEMS Tip

To optimize your visit for the Oasaji ritual, JEMS recommends arranging a private car transfer from Nagano Station directly to Zenkoji Daimon well before dawn (around 5:30 AM). Our local guides can secure prime viewing spots near the main hall for the juzu blessing, ensuring a truly personal and serene experience away from the general rush. We can also pre-purchase tickets for the inner sanctum and other special access areas for a seamless progression.

About

Zenkoji Temple, founded nearly 1,400 years ago, stands as a spiritual heart of Nagano City, enshrining one of Japan's oldest Buddhist icons. Pilgrims have journeyed here for centuries to pray for health, happiness, and rebirth. Visitors can explore the grand grounds, participate in the daily Oasaji morning ritual, and traverse the unique pitch-black passage beneath the main hall for a profound cultural experience.

Crowd Avoidance

Zenkoji experiences peak crowds during morning hours, especially for Oasaji, and throughout the day on weekends and national holidays. To mitigate this, attend the Oasaji on a weekday between Tuesday and Thursday, aiming to arrive by 5:45 AM. For general temple exploration, visit after 3:00 PM on a weekday, when most day-trippers have departed, allowing for a more contemplative atmosphere.

Getting There

From Nagano Station, take the Nagano Dentetsu Bus or a local bus from the Zenkoji-guchi (east) exit to the Zenkoji Daimon bus stop (approx. 15 minutes). From Zenkoji Daimon, the main gate of the temple is a leisurely 5-minute walk up the Nakamise-dori (shopping street).
