Insider Tip
Tokyo tournaments: January, May, September. Arrive early for the lower-division bouts — the arena is nearly empty and you can sit anywhere. Top-division bouts start around 3:30pm.
JEMS Tip
We secure tournament tickets (which sell out within hours of release) and arrange morning practice visits at stables that accept visitors — with full etiquette briefing.
About
Sumo tournaments (honbasho) are held three times a year in Tokyo at Ryogoku Kokugikan. The atmosphere is electric, with centuries-old rituals, salt-throwing purification, and explosive bouts. Even outside tournament season, morning practice sessions at sumo stables offer intimate access.
Crowd Avoidance
Visit on weekdays when possible. Tokyo attractions are busiest on weekends and national holidays.
Getting There
Ryogoku Station (JR Sobu Line) — west exit, 2-minute walk to Kokugikan.
