Insider Tip
The bamboo grove is a 5-minute walk. Most people turn back at the end — continue to Okochi Sanso (¥1,000, includes matcha) for a stunning garden with almost no tourists.
JEMS Tip
We route you through the bamboo grove at dawn (before 7am) when it is nearly empty, then connect you to the lesser-known Okochi Sanso villa garden — one of Kyoto's most beautiful private gardens.
About
The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is a surreal corridor of towering bamboo stalks that filter sunlight into an ethereal green glow. Nearby, the Iwatayama Monkey Park offers close encounters with wild Japanese macaques and panoramic views of Kyoto from the hilltop.
Crowd Avoidance
Start early morning for the best experience and fewer people. Autumn foliage and cherry blossom seasons are the most crowded periods.
Getting There
Saga-Arashiyama Station (JR San-in Line) — 10-minute walk to bamboo grove. Also Arashiyama Station (Hankyu Line).
