Insider Tip
Sit on the far right end of the viewing veranda — it is always the least crowded spot and offers the most complete view of the garden.
JEMS Tip
We time your visit for early morning when the veranda is quiet enough for genuine contemplation, and explain the philosophical principles behind the garden's design.
About
Ryoan-ji houses Japan's most celebrated zen rock garden — 15 stones arranged on raked white gravel, designed so that no matter where you sit, one stone is always hidden. The surrounding temple grounds include a beautiful moss garden and mirror pond.
Crowd Avoidance
Visit early morning at opening time or late afternoon to avoid tour groups. Weekdays are much quieter than weekends.
Getting There
Bus 59 from Kinkaku-ji (10 min). Often combined with Kinkaku-ji and Ninna-ji in a northwest Kyoto circuit.
