Insider Tip

Beyond the famed seasonal beauty, witness the bridge after sunset when it's often illuminated, transforming the river scene into a romantic spectacle. Locally, children participate in an initiation where they cross the bridge without looking back to ensure good luck—a unique cultural nuance often missed by visitors. Consider pairing your visit with a traditional Hozugawa River boat ride, which often concludes near the bridge.

JEMS Tip

From JR Kyoto Station, take the JR Sagano Line (Platforms 31-33) to Saga-Arashiyama Station. Use the South Exit for the most direct 15-minute walk to the bridge, passing through charming streets. For a truly exclusive experience, JEMS can arrange a private early morning transfer, ensuring your arrival before 8 AM to enjoy the bridge and surrounding nature in pristine tranquility, ahead of the first tour groups.

About

Togetsukyo Bridge is a historic wooden bridge spanning the Oi River in Kyoto's Arashiyama district, renowned for its breathtaking seasonal scenery. Originally built in 836, the current structure from 1606 offers stunning views of Arashiyama Mountain, especially during spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage. The bridge, whose name means 'Moon-Crossing Bridge' from an emperor's poem, serves as a central landmark for exploring the surrounding cafes, shops, and attractions.

Crowd Avoidance

Togetsukyo Bridge experiences extreme crowds during cherry blossom (late March-early April) and autumn foliage (late November-early December) seasons, and throughout weekends/national holidays. For optimal crowd avoidance, visit on a weekday immediately after sunrise (7-8 AM) or in the late evening after 8 PM. Winter (January-February) offers beautifully crisp, less crowded views and significantly calmer experiences.

Getting There

From JR Kyoto Station, take the JR Sagano Line (also known as the San-in Line) from Platforms 31-33. The train journey to Saga-Arashiyama Station typically takes about 16 minutes. From Saga-Arashiyama Station, the bridge is approximately a 15-minute walk, primarily via the main street leading towards the river.
