Insider Tip
Don't miss collecting the two unique commemorative stamps – one from the elevator lobby on the Honshu side and another from the Kyushu side. Presenting both stamps at designated tourism information centers allows you to receive a 'Kanmon TOPPA! Commemorative Certificate,' a special souvenir often overlooked by casual visitors.
JEMS Tip
To optimize your visit, JEMS recommends starting on the Shimonoseki side (Yamaguchi) after enjoying a fresh seafood lunch at Karato Market, which is a short walk away. This allows for a comfortable stroll through the tunnel, emerging on the Mojiko side (Fukuoka) to seamlessly explore the Mojiko Retro area, including its historic buildings, museums, or to enjoy local specialty 'yaki curry'.
About
Opened in 1958, the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel offers a unique 780-meter walk approximately 60 meters below sea level, connecting Honshu (Yamaguchi Prefecture) and Kyushu (Fukuoka Prefecture). Visitors can traverse the clearly marked prefectural boundary inside the tunnel and enjoy informational panels and maritime-themed art along the path.
Crowd Avoidance
To avoid crowds, plan your visit for a weekday, particularly during the early morning (6:00 AM - 9:00 AM) or late afternoon (4:00 PM - 7:00 PM). Weekends and public holidays see a significant increase in local joggers and tourists, making the tunnel feel much busier, especially around the prefectural border photo spot.
Getting There
From Mojiko Station (JR Kagoshima Line), take a Nishitetsu Bus bound for 'Kanmon Tunnel Jindoguchi' (関門トンネル人道口) and alight there. The bus ride typically takes about 15-20 minutes, with the tunnel entrance located directly in front of the bus stop.
