Insider Tip

The Shiratani Unsuikyo ravine (2-3 hour hike) is the Mononoke forest and far more accessible than the Jomon Sugi trek.

JEMS Tip

We plan the Jomon Sugi trek (10-hour round trip) with proper gear advice and book mountain huts for multi-day treks.

About

Yakushima is a UNESCO World Heritage island south of Kyushu, famous for its ancient Jomon Sugi cedar tree (estimated 2,000-7,000 years old). The moss-covered primeval forest inspired the setting of Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke.

Crowd Avoidance

Visit on weekdays and arrive early for the best experience with fewer crowds. Avoid national holidays and peak tourist seasons.

Getting There

Flight from Osaka/Fukuoka (1-1.5 hrs) or ferry from Kagoshima (2-4 hrs).
