Insider Tip

Check the tide tables before visiting. High tide for the floating torii, low tide to walk out to it. The ropeway to Mt. Misen summit offers stunning views. Try the grilled oysters (¥200 each) at the stalls near the ferry terminal.

JEMS Tip

We time your visit to see the torii gate at both high tide (floating) and low tide (walkable), and route you to the quieter south side of the island for the best Mt. Misen trail.

About

Miyajima (Itsukushima) island is famous for its "floating" vermillion torii gate that appears to stand in the sea at high tide. The island also features Itsukushima Shrine (UNESCO), friendly wild deer, Mt. Misen hiking trails, and excellent oyster restaurants.

Crowd Avoidance

Visit early morning at opening time or late afternoon to avoid tour groups. Weekdays are much quieter than weekends.
