Insider Tip

Honen-in temple (free, 5 min off the path) has a stunning moss-covered gate and is almost always empty. The path is most beautiful in early April (cherry blossoms) and late November (autumn leaves).

JEMS Tip

We map the hidden side temples along the path that most walkers pass without noticing, and recommend the best seasonal timing — cherry blossoms in April, autumn foliage in November.

About

The Philosopher's Path is a 2km stone path along a cherry-tree-lined canal in Kyoto's Higashiyama district. It connects Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion) to Nanzen-ji, passing small temples, cafes, and artisan shops. Named after philosopher Nishida Kitaro who meditated here daily.

Crowd Avoidance

Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid tour bus crowds. Kyoto is most crowded during cherry blossom (late March-April) and autumn foliage (November) seasons.

Getting There

Bus 100 from Kyoto Station to Ginkaku-ji-michi (30 min). Walk south along the path to Nanzen-ji.
