Insider Tip
Avoid the ¥1,000 tourist tea experiences near Kiyomizu-dera. A proper private ceremony costs ¥3,000–¥5,000 and is infinitely more meaningful.
JEMS Tip
We book private tea ceremony sessions (not the tourist group ones) with English-speaking tea masters who explain the philosophy behind each movement. We also brief you on proper etiquette beforehand.
About
A traditional tea ceremony (chado) is a meditative ritual of preparing and serving matcha green tea. In Kyoto, you can experience this in authentic tea houses with tatami rooms, hanging scrolls, and seasonal flower arrangements. The ceremony teaches mindfulness, respect, and the beauty of simplicity.
Crowd Avoidance
Book weekday sessions for smaller groups and a more personal experience. Weekend slots fill up quickly.
