Insider Tip
Visit before 11am to avoid the worst crowds. Many stalls close by 5pm. The eastern end (near Teramachi) is less crowded than the western entrance.
JEMS Tip
We create a tasting route highlighting the best stalls for each specialty — the knife shop with the sharpest blades, the tofu maker with 300 years of history, and the wagashi artist whose seasonal creations sell out by noon.
About
Nishiki Market is a narrow, five-block-long covered shopping street in central Kyoto with over 100 shops and stalls selling fresh seafood, Kyoto pickles, tofu, wagashi sweets, knives, and seasonal specialties. It has been Kyoto's primary food market since the 1600s.
Crowd Avoidance
Visit for an early lunch (11am) or late lunch (2-3pm) to avoid peak dining crowds. Weekdays have shorter waits.
Getting There
Shijo Station (Karasuma Line) — 3-minute walk east. Also Kawaramachi Station (Hankyu Line).
