Insider Tip

Look closely at the ongoing restoration efforts; Dejima aims to be fully reinstated as an island by digging canals around all four sides, offering a glimpse into a living historical project. Don't miss the detailed Edo-period models that allow you to compare Dejima's original fan shape and layout with its current, reclaimed form, providing a profound understanding of its transformation.

JEMS Tip

To maximize your visit, JEMS recommends arriving via the Nagasaki Electric Tramway (Tram Line 1) directly to the Dejima stop, which positions you immediately at the main entrance. We can pre-arrange kimono rentals on-site for a more immersive photo experience, and provide a curated route to ensure you efficiently explore all significant reconstructed buildings, including the Chief Factor's Residence and the First Ship Captain's Quarters, before navigating towards the historical model exhibition.

About

Dejima was a fan-shaped artificial island constructed in 1636 in Nagasaki's port, initially to segregate Portuguese residents and later serving as the Dutch East India Company's trading post during Japan's two centuries of national isolation. Today, though no longer an island due to land reclamation, it is a meticulously restored historical site featuring residences, warehouses, and gates that vividly recreate its Edo-period appearance, allowing visitors to experience the unique blend of Japanese and Western cultures.

Crowd Avoidance

Dejima is most tranquil during early mornings (8:00-9:30 AM) or late afternoons/evenings (5:30-8:00 PM last entry). Weekdays are generally less crowded than weekends and national holidays. Avoid midday, especially from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, when tour groups are most prevalent.

Getting There

From Nagasaki Station, take Nagasaki Electric Tramway Line 1 (blue route) in the direction of Shokakuji-shita or Sofukuji. The ride to Dejima tram stop takes approximately 5 minutes and costs 140 yen. The tram stop is located directly adjacent to the Dejima entrance.
