Insider Tip
Combine with Fushimi Inari (one station away on the Keihan Line) for a full Fushimi day. The Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum (¥600) includes three tastings.
JEMS Tip
We arrange private brewery tours with English-speaking guides and pair the sake tasting with a traditional lunch at a brewery restaurant.
About
Fushimi is one of Japan's most important sake-brewing districts, blessed with pristine underground water. Several historic breweries offer tours and tastings, including Gekkeikan (founded 1637) and Kizakura. The canal-side streets are picturesque and peaceful.
Crowd Avoidance
Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid tour bus crowds. Kyoto is most crowded during cherry blossom (late March-April) and autumn foliage (November) seasons.
Getting There
Chushojima Station (Keihan Line) — 5-minute walk to the brewery district. Also Fushimi-Momoyama Station (Kintetsu Line).
