Insider Tip

The aqueduct is free to visit and most photogenic in autumn. Climb the Sanmon gate (¥600) for the best view in eastern Kyoto.

JEMS Tip

We route you through the lesser-known sub-temples (Tenju-an, Konchi-in) that have stunning gardens without the crowds.

About

Nanzen-ji is one of Kyoto's most important zen temples. The massive Sanmon gate offers panoramic views, and the brick aqueduct (Suirokaku) built in 1890 creates a striking contrast of Western engineering within a Japanese temple.

Crowd Avoidance

Visit early morning at opening time or late afternoon to avoid tour groups. Weekdays are much quieter than weekends.

Getting There

Keage Station (Tozai Line) — 10-minute walk. End point of the Philosopher's Path.
