Insider Tip
Walk the alley at dusk when the lanterns are lit. In summer (May-Sep), the riverside yuka dining is magical.
JEMS Tip
We secure reservations at the best Pontocho restaurants (many are Japanese-phone-only) and book a riverside yuka table in summer.
About
Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most atmospheric dining streets — a narrow stone-paved alley running parallel to the Kamogawa River, lined with traditional restaurants, many offering riverside terrace dining (yuka) in summer.
Crowd Avoidance
Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid tour bus crowds. Kyoto is most crowded during cherry blossom (late March-April) and autumn foliage (November) seasons.
Getting There
Kawaramachi Station (Hankyu Line) — 3-minute walk east to the alley entrance.
